Across higher education, one theme has become impossible to ignore. Student needs are rising faster than campuses can respond.
Enrollment patterns are shifting. Academic preparation gaps have widened. More students are juggling jobs, family responsibilities, and financial strain while navigating complex learning environments. At the same time, budgets are tightening and staff capacity is stretched to its limits.
The challenge is not that colleges and universities lack commitment. It is that the traditional way of delivering student support simply cannot keep up.
The Limits of Traditional Models
For decades, institutions have relied on centralized tutoring centers, faculty office hours, and one-to-one advising to help students succeed. These services remain valuable, but they were never designed to reach every learner who needs support.
Each additional student means another appointment to schedule, another hour to cover, another staff member to hire. When institutions try to scale these models, they often encounter logistical and financial barriers long before they meet the true level of student demand.
The result is a system where many students who could benefit from support never receive it. That gap most often affects first-generation students, commuters, and those balancing competing priorities who may feel less comfortable seeking help in formal settings. Even on campuses with strong programs, accessibility and awareness can lag behind need.
Rethinking What Scalability Means
If colleges cannot scale traditional support models, the question becomes: what does scalable support look like?
It begins with reframing the problem. Scalability is not about replacing people with technology. It is about using technology to strengthen and extend the human connections that define great learning experiences.
In this model, peer tutoring becomes a central strategy rather than a supplemental service. Students learn from one another through structured, intentional programs that are easy to access, designed for flexibility, and embedded in the daily rhythm of campus life.
Peer-to-Peer Support as a System
Campuses that have embraced peer learning are proving that scalability and personalization can coexist.
At Fort Valley State University in Georgia, peer tutoring has become one of the most effective tools for improving student outcomes. Since partnering with Knack in 2022, FVSU has completed nearly 3,000 tutoring sessions, logged more than 4,000 contact hours, and reached hundreds of students across 170 courses.
More than half of those students had never used any tutoring service before. That is a powerful indicator of expanded access.
FVSU’s approach works because it combines people-first design with technology that removes administrative barriers. Tutor onboarding, timesheets, and payroll are all managed through Knack’s platform, which frees up staff to focus on coaching and student engagement. Faculty are also more involved, referring students early and helping tutors align their sessions with course outcomes.
The impact goes beyond the numbers. As Dr. Heidi Gregg, Academic Support Coordinator at FVSU, shared in a recent Knack webinar, the goal was not just to increase usage, but to shift the culture. “We had to build trust,” she said. “We had to show students that asking for help is a strength.”
Technology That Scales Connection, Not Bureaucracy
One of the biggest misconceptions about scaling student support is that it requires cutting corners or losing the personal touch that makes tutoring effective. In reality, scaling can enhance quality if it is done intentionally.
Partnerships like these can handle the repetitive tasks that slow programs down: scheduling, reporting, tracking, and payment processing. When these systems run smoothly, staff can focus on relationship-building, program improvement, and student outcomes.
At the same time, data becomes a strategic asset rather than an afterthought. By tracking who uses tutoring, how often they return, and what impact it has on academic performance, campuses can identify gaps and refine outreach. This kind of visibility transforms tutoring from a reactive service into an active driver of access and success.
The Access Advantage
Scalable peer learning models are not only efficient. They expand access to meaningful academic support for every student who needs it.
Traditional structures often favor those who already know how to navigate them. Peer programs meet students where they are, in familiar environments, and provide help from someone who has walked the same path. That relatability builds trust and normalizes help-seeking.
When designed with intention, peer tutoring can reach students who might otherwise go without support. Over time, that reach grows into confidence, connection, and persistence.
A Cultural Shift in Student Success
Scaling support is not just an operational decision. It is a cultural one.
When tutoring is visible, accessible, and celebrated, it becomes part of the fabric of campus life. Students no longer see it as a last resort, but as a normal and proactive part of learning. Tutors, in turn, gain valuable leadership and communication skills that prepare them for life after college.
The result is a self-sustaining ecosystem of learning, where students help students succeed and institutions amplify their impact without adding layers of bureaucracy.
The Future of Student Support
For higher education leaders, the path forward is clear. Meeting student needs at scale requires moving beyond traditional models that rely on adding more people or more hours. It means embracing technology, data, and design thinking to build systems that are both efficient and human-centered.
Peer learning is not a trend. It is an evolution in how institutions think about teaching, support, and access.
The question is no longer whether we can afford to scale student support. The real question is whether we can afford not to.
Scalability is not about doing more with less. It is about doing better for more.
Every campus is looking for new ways to do more for students without adding more burden. Scalable peer learning offers a proven path forward. Let’s reimagine what access can look like—together.
